Srinagar: Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar Saturday hosted a Science Education Promotion Programme under ‘Sci Fest 2024’.
The event was organized by Department of Biotechnology and Department of Industrial Chemistry of the host college in collaboration with the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) Patiala.
The event was sponsored by TIET under the DST-PURSE Grant Students from different colleges—SP College Srinagar, Amar Singh College, GCW Nawakadal, and AAA Memorial College, Bemina- participated in the event.
Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) Ruhi Jan Kanth and Dr. Debabrata Deb (Associate Professor in Theoretical Physics, TIET) spoke about the relevance of such programmes.
A career counselling session was conducted by the invited speaker, Dr. Prince Ahmad Ganai (Professor, NIT Srinagar) on “Career Awareness in Basic Science.” Dr. Ganai apprised the students about different career options available after 10+2, emphasizing on the importance of acquiring new skills.
He also referred to various competitive exams like JAM, GATE and NET and shared the tips to gain admission in renowned institutions such as IITs and IISERs.
Guest speaker Dr. Ovais Shafiq Qadri (Assistant Professor in Biotechnology, TIET) briefed the students about the courses offered, rankings, and study opportunities at TIET.
An Intercollege Quiz Competition was also held, featuring five teams from different colleges in which SP College Srinagar emerged as the winner. Team from GCW MA road secured the second while AAAM Degree college, Bemina the third position.
Dr. Muneesa Bashir (Assistant Professor, Biotechnology) served as the moderator for the programme.
Dr. Altaf Ahmad Najar (Assistant Professor, Industrial Chemistry) conducted the quiz session with Dr. Shabir Ahmad (Assistant Professor, Food Science and Technology) serving as the scorer. Prize distribution ceremony was held where winners were felicitated with medals and Trophies.
