New Delhi: Sri Lanka stand-in captain Kusal Mendis made a surprise statement after Virat Kohli scored his 49th ODI hundred during the match between India and South Africa on November 5.

Celebrating his 35th birthday, Kohli scored his 49th One Day International (ODI) century during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This feat allowed him to equal the record set by legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar for the most number of ODI centuries.

Kohli’s century was a result of a hard-fought innings on a turning pitch and under hot weather conditions. He scored 101 runs from 127 balls, hitting 10 fours.Speaking at the press conference ahead of the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh game in Delhi, Mendis was told that Kohli had equaled Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds.

The stand-in Sri Lankan skipper would look a bit confused and laughed before asking the reported why he would congratulate the star batter for the achievement.

“Why I would congratulate him?” responded Mendis. The statement has not gone down well with the Indian and Kohli fans in particular and have come down heavily, largely taking social media as means, to criticize the Sri Lankan skipper.
