Lolab (Kupwara): Scores of residents in Walkul on Thursday staged a peaceful protest against Jal Shakti Department (previously Public Health Engineering) over unavailability of potable water supply in the village.

The locals which included men and women voiced their concern over the absence of basic amenity and asked for accountability from the Jal Shakti Department for their failure to provide adequate drinking water to the community.

“Despite the government spending lakhs of rupees on a water project under “water supply scheme” in our area, we still don’t have access to drinking water,” said an agitated local, adding, “the project has not been effective, leaving us all suffering.”

“We are forced to fetch water from far off places, which too is unclean at most of the times.”

“If lakhs of rupees have been spent on a water project, one wonders why has it been situated so far from any of the feasible water sources”, another resident said.

When contacted, Executive Engineer Jal Shakti Department said that a committee would be formed to investigate the matter. “The grievance of the locals would be addressed as soon as possible,” he said further.
