Lolab: In response to the devastating impact of relentless rainfall in the Lolab valley, Vice Chairman, District Development Council Kupwara, Haji Farooq Ahmad Mir conducted a comprehensive tour of the Wavoora Territorial Constituency here on Sunday. The visit was aimed to assess the widespread damage caused by landslides and connect directly with the affected communities.
During his day-long tour, Haji Farooq visited several key areas, including Shrant, Kawari, Doban, Warno, Sewer, Gratnard, Tenkipora, Gagal, Bat Gagal, and Bedibera, to evaluate the aftermath of the landslides. He conducted on-site assessments and closely monitored the situation. Accompanied by representatives from various government departments, such as the Roads and Buildings (R&B), Rural Development Department (RDD), Public Health Engineering (PHE), and other relevant authorities, Haji Farooq took detailed stock of the situation.
The Vice Chairman emphasized the need for immediate action, instructing concerned authorities to implement protective measures in the affected areas. He revealed that he had already raised the issue with the district administration Kupwara, leading to the approval of two blocks under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This approval will ensure that the affected areas receive the attention and support they require.
The unrelenting rains had caused significant landslides, resulting in damage to several homes and infrastructure. In response, Haji Farooq directed the relevant departments to prioritize the protection of these vulnerable areas. He also assured local residents that he would continue to push for urgent interventions from the district administration.
“Wherever a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is required, we will expedite the process to ensure timely action,” he added.
During the visit, Haji Farooq also took the opportunity to address ongoing issues in the region, particularly those concerning the power supply. Several local delegations raised concerns about unscheduled power cuts, prompting the Vice Chairman to direct the concerned authorities to investigate and address these issues aimed the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.
During the day-long tour, Haji Farooq visited Bedibera-Tangchek in Lolab, where he met with local youth. During the interaction, he assured the local youth that a new playfield would be developed at New Colony Bedibera.
“Our youth are at a crucial juncture, and we must provide them with opportunities to channel their energy into positive activities. A dedicated playfield will not only help our young people hone their sporting skills but will also keep them away from the dangers of drug abuse and other social evils,” Haji Farooq stated,
He also expressed his deep appreciation for the district administration’s timely response during the heavy rainfall and landslides. “Throughout this challenging period, I have maintained constant communication with the district administration, which has been fully committed to managing the crisis and ensuring that all necessary precautions were taken across the district,”
In the meantime, Vice Chairman instructed the concerned authorities to prepare for the task as soon as the weather begins to improve.
As the Vice Chairman concluded his day-long tour, he reiterated his commitment to serving the needs of the people in Wavoora and ensuring that their concerns are addressed with urgency. Haji Farooq assured the affected communities that he would continue to engage with local authorities and work toward the rapid restoration of normalcy in the region.
