Indore: Gujarat’s Urvil Patel smashed the fastest century by an Indian batter in T20 cricket. The right-handed batter scored a 28-ball hundred against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on Wednesday, November 27 at the Emerald Heights International School Ground in Indore. Rishabh Pant earlier held the record after he smashed a 32-ball hundred for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh back in 2018 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Urvil made an unbeaten 113 off 35 balls with seven fours and 12 sixes, helping Gujarat chase down 156 with 58 balls to spare. Patel also smacked the second-fastest hundred in T20s. Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan holds the record after he scored a 27-ball century against Cyprus earlier this year at the Happy Valley Ground.
He also scored the second-fastest hundred by an Indian in List A cricket in November 2023. Urvil got to his 100 in just 41 balls for Gujarat against Arunachal Pradesh in Chandigarh. It was just a ball slower than Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball hundred for Baroda against Maharashtra in 2010.
Who is Urvil Patel?
Hailing from Mehsana, Baroda, Urvil made his debut for Baroda back in 2018 in a T20 against Mumbai in Rajkot. In the same year, he forayed into List A cricket as well. But it took him six more years to play first-class cricket when he made his debut in the previous edition of the Ranji Trophy.
Gujarat Titans picked Urvil for a price of INR 20 lakh for the 2023 season, but he did not get to play a single match. After being released by GT, Urvil did not find a team for the upcoming edition. In 44 T20 matches, he has scored 988 runs at an average of 23.52 and a strike-rate of 164.11 with a hundred and four fifties to his name.
