Srinagar: As the budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather issued a stern warning to members against indiscipline, asserting that disruptions would not be tolerated in the House.

Addressing the Assembly on the opening day, widely expected to witness heated exchanges, Rather said that while differences of opinion are intrinsic to a democratic setup, they must be articulated with dignity and decorum. โ€œThere was a time when people learned about Assembly proceedings the next day through newspapers. Today, they are watching us live in their homes. We should not humiliate or disrespect one another,โ€ he said.

Emphasising the Assemblyโ€™s responsibility towards the public, the Speaker said citizens expect meaningful deliberations and solutions to their problems rather than disruptions. โ€œPeople want solutions, not disturbances. Constituents are closely watching how their issues are being raised in the House,โ€ he remarked.

Rather assured members that adequate time would be provided to raise their concerns during the budget session. He also informed the House that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) has decided that the first part of the budget session will be held in two sittings.

Reiterating his position, the Speaker said maintaining order was his foremost duty. โ€œMy role is to ensure discipline in the House, and I will not allow indiscipline under any circumstances,โ€ he asserted.
