Srinagar: Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam briefly halted his live performance in Srinagar on Sunday evening when the Azaan echoed from a nearby mosque. The singer lowered the microphone, waited for the call to prayer to conclude, and then resumed his concert, a gesture that quickly drew attention and reopened public discussion.
The concert had already sparked mixed reactions in the Valley. In the days leading up to the event, some social media users opposed the show entirely, while others questioned Nigamโs presence due to his past remarks about the Azaan. Sundayโs pause reignited memories of that controversy and prompted varied responses from the audience and wider public.
โPausing during the Azaan was the right thing. It showed basic respect,โ said an attendee who witnessed the moment.
However, others remained critical. โThis doesnโt undo what he said before. A symbolic pause cannot replace genuine sensitivity,โ said a local resident.
Some attendees expressed cautious appreciation. โItโs a small gesture, but it shows he is aware of the community around him,โ said another concertgoer.
Yet another section of the public remained skeptical. โHe could have done more to acknowledge the controversy from 2017. Pausing for a few minutes isnโt enough,โ said a local.
Notably, the controversy dates back to April 2017, when Nigam posted a series of tweets expressing frustration at being woken by the early-morning Azaan. His remarks then triggered widespread criticism, with many considering his tone dismissive toward an important religious practice. The episode has continued to follow the singer in public memory.
Seen in this context, Sundayโs pause has taken on broader significance, and while Nigam’s fans view it as a sign of respect and maturity, while critics argue it is a minimal gesture that does not address the sentiments affected by his earlier statements.
