Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE) has clarified that it cannot create or allocate supernumerary MBBS seats, leaving the fate of 50 students admitted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) to the government.

In a communication to the Administrative Secretary of the Health and Medical Education Department, JKBOPEE said it is constrained from conducting any fresh counselling for the academic session 2025–26, as it cannot exceed the schedule set by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi.

The Board noted that the data of 1,410 MBBS candidates, including the 50 students at SMVDIME, had already been uploaded to the MCC portal by the last date of joining on December 31, 2025. JKBOPEE emphasised that “creation and allotment of supernumerary seats does not fall within the ambit of JKBOPEE.”

The Board stated that any decision regarding the allocation of additional MBBS seats would need to be taken at the government level, in consultation with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the concerned medical colleges in the Union Territory.
