Only Top 7 Teams At World Cup Conclusion To Earn Direct Entry, Suggests New Plan
New Delhi: Several top teams have been caught in a dilemma as ICC, as per ESPNCricinfo, has revealed the qualification scenario for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, to be played in Pakistan.
The teams that will finish in the top 7 positions in the ICC World Cup 2023 will qualify for the tournament, slated to take place in Pakistan.
It’ll be an eight-team competition with hosts getting a sure-shot entry.
The Qualification for the tournament will truly depend on the performance in the ICC World Cup 2023.
Bangladesh and England, who are currently 9th and 10th, will be under pressure as if they don’t enter into the top 8, they will miss the tournament. This also means that West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Ireland, who didn’t qualify for the ICC World Cup 2023, won’t be able to take part in the tournament.
As per the reports in ESPNCricinfo, it is learnt some cricket boards were taken by surprise after ICC unveiled the qualification scenario.
However, the ICC Spokesperson confirmed that the qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved by the ICC Board in 2021.
The tournament was reintroduced by the governing body after vanishing it earlier.
In 2013 and 2017, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings qualified for the tournament.
Currently, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are in contention to qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025.
It remains to be seen how things will pan out after the end of the tournament.
