Handwara: Rights activist cum Lawyer Rasikh Rasool Bhat has called on local authorities to immediately restore waste collection services in the rural areas of North Kashmir like Handwara, Kupwara Bandipora and Baramulla. He stressed the urgent need for a robust and sustainable waste management system to safeguard public health and prevent a looming environmental disaster.
Rasikh Rasool pointed out that there is currently no waste collection mechanism in place across the rural areas of North Kashmir nor is there any proper waste management infrastructure. This, he warned, poses serious health risks to the local population.
He highlighted that in the recent past, uncollected waste had been a major cause of drainage blockages in almost all villages of North Kashmir, leading to significant inconvenience for the public and contributing to unsanitary conditions.
Calling for immediate action, Rasikh urged the concerned authorities to develop and implement a comprehensive waste management strategy tailored to the needs of rural areas. “If not addressed timely, the situation could spiral into a full-blown environmental and public health crisis,” he cautioned.
