Mumbai: Parallel cinema pioneer Shyam Benegal has died at the age of 90 in Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital due to kidney-related issues, confirmed his daughter, Pia Benegal.

The director, best known for films like ‘Manthan’ and ‘Zubeidaa’, celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14 with family and friends, including prominent actors such as Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi.

Benegal was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
