Handwara: Red Wings Handwara on Sunday defeated Aushotosh Army Goodwill School Budkoot to lift the trophy of Women’s Cricket Tournament played at BakiAker.

“The Indian Army has always been at the forefront in nurturing local talent in various fields including games and sports. Cricket is a game which is very passionately played in the heartland of Handwara and is very close to the heart of each and every Handwarian”, reads a statement issued here.

“The first ever Women’s Cricket tournament played on a knockout basis, was organised by the Indian Army, the matches of which started on October 28, 2023”, reads the statement.

The final match of the tournament, as per the statement, was played on October 29, 2023 at Sports ground BakiAker Handwara between Aushtosh Army Goodwill School Budkoot Handwara and Red Wings Handwara and had supporters thronging the venue in huge masses to cheer and support their respective favourite team. The fervour at the cricketing extravaganza was a sight to behold.

Aushtosh Army Goodwill School Budkoot Handwara lost the final match with the margin of 68 runs.

The winning and runners up teams and the other participating teams were given trophies and exciting cash prizes as per the merit.

CADC Handwara Nazir Ahmed attended the match as Chief Guest in the august presence of DDC Rajwar Mir Sulaiman, Tehsildar Handwara Shahbaz Ahmad, ZEO Handwara Mohammad Rafeeq, Vice Chairman Municipal Committee Handwara, Sarpanch Bakiaker Firdous Ahmad and other respectable citizenry of the area.

The dignitaries on the eve appreciated the initiative and efforts of the Indian Army and local populace.

This tournament, the army said, was a platform for the budding talents of Handwara to showcase their talent and skills.

“The overwhelming crowd is a testimony to the motto of “Badalta Kashmir” (Changing Kashmir)”, they said.
