Anantnag: Amid a noticeable decline in student interest in Mathematics across the Kashmir Valley, NICE Secondary School Sirigufwara has taken an initiative to encourage students to reconnect with the subject.
Chairman of NICE Secondary School, Ayash Bhat, said enrollment in Mathematics at higher secondary and college levels has dropped sharply in recent years, raising concerns among educators. To address the trend, the school organised a Mathematics test on December 22, 2025 observed as National Mathematics Day, at Government Degree College Bijbehara. The objective was to motivate students and strengthen their problem solving abilities.
An award ceremony was held around ten days later at Shaheed Humayun Muzzamil Memorial Government Degree College Boys Anantnag to felicitate students who performed well in the test. The event saw active participation from students, teachers and parents.
District Education Planning Officer Anantnag, Assadullah Mir, Head of the Department of English at Government Degree College Boys Anantnag, and other dignitaries attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Ayash Bhat said Mathematics remains a core subject and forms the foundation of scientific and technical education. He said the initiative aimed to build confidence among students and help them understand the relevance of Mathematics in academics and real life.
Students welcomed the effort and said such competitions reduce fear associated with the subject and make learning more engaging. Educationists present at the event said similar initiatives can play an important role in restoring student interest in Mathematics across the Valley.
DEPO Anantnag Assadullah Mir appreciated the initiative and said such efforts strengthen academic foundations and help promote a scientific outlook among students.
