Mothers’ Day is a special occasion dedicated to honoring mothers and motherly figures for their unwavering love, selfless sacrifices and invaluable contributions to the families and society. Celebrated across various cultures and countries, it is a day to express gratitude, affection and appreciation for the women who serve as nurturers, protectors and guiding lights in our lives.

The origins of Mothers’ Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where festivals were held in honor of mother goddesses. In modern history, the movement for an official Mothers’ Day began in the early 20th century. In the United States, it was Anna Jarvis who championed the idea of a national holiday to recognize mothers. After years of advocacy, Mothers’ Day was officially established in 1914, with the second Sunday of May designated for the celebration.

While the date of Mothers’ Day varies across countries, the sentiment remains universal. In nations like the United States, Canada and India, it is observed on the second Sunday of May. The United Kingdom celebrates Mothering Sunday during Lent, while other countries such as Thailand and Indonesia observe it on different dates. Mother’s Day in Kashmir, like in many other parts of the world, is observed on the second Sunday of May. In 2025, that falls on May 11.

Mothers’ Day is much more than a commercial day. It holds deep emotional significance, offering a chance to reflect on the many sacrifices mothers make—from enduring childbirth and sleepless nights to offering emotional support and guidance through life’s highs and lows. It is a reminder of the profound influence mothers have in shaping individuals, families and communities alike.

In Kashmir, the day is celebrated with love and respect for mothers, though the traditions may blend modern and cultural elements. While it’s not a traditional Kashmiri festival, younger generations often celebrate it by, gifting flowers, shawls or traditional Kashmiri items like pherans or jewelery, sharing meals, often cooking at home or dining out. Expressing gratitude through poetry, cards or social media posts in Urdu, Kashmiri, or English, spending time together in the scenic outdoors of the valley. These emotional tributes evoke both laughter and tears, reminding everyone of the pivotal role mothers play in instilling values, nurturing dreams and offering unwavering support through every stage of life. These gestures honor their unique journeys, resilience and ability to face life’s challenges with grace and determination. Organizers emphasize that while one day is set aside for honoring mothers, their influence deserves daily recognition.

Speakers and organizers often use the occasion to highlight the silent strength and boundless love that mothers provide, especially during the formative years of a child’s development. Their guidance and sacrifices shape the foundation of character and the future of generations to come.

The day has a powerful message of unity and love, encouraging families to cherish and honor their mothers more often. It serves not only as a tribute but also as an inspiration for everyone to embody the qualities of compassion, strength and empathy that mothers so beautifully represent.

In today’s fast-paced world, Mothers’ Day reminds us to pause and appreciate the unconditional love and support that mothers provide. It also celebrates adoptive mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers and all caregivers who fulfill maternal roles with devotion and care.

Respecting and protecting a mother’s dignity is our highest responsibility. From the sacrifices she makes to the unconditional love she gives, a mother deserves not just our care, but our deepest respect. Whether in the home, society, or policy—upholding her honor reflects the values of a truly compassionate and just community.

Mothers’ Day is a heartfelt tribute to the women who shape our lives with love, resilience and strength. Whether marked with a simple hug, a warm message, or a grand gesture, the essence of the celebration lies in recognizing a mother’s irreplaceable role. It is a day to say thank you—for everything.

Mothers’ Day is not just a celebration—it is a reflection of the deep respect, love, and honor that Islam and humanity as a whole bestow upon mothers. The words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) serve as a timeless reminder of a mother’s unmatched status—her sacrifices, her love, and her role in shaping lives cannot be measured.

Whether it is through a kind word, a heartfelt prayer, or a simple act of service, let us make every day an opportunity to honor and cherish our mothers. Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, may we not only express our gratitude but also strive to uphold the values of respect, obedience, and love for our mothers as taught by our faith, because truly, a mother’s love is the first glimpse of God’s mercy on earth.
