If the govt fails to review the bills within one week, we will be forced to take a stand and launch a mass agitation
Shopian: In a press conference held earlier today, Shabir Ahmad Kullay, the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Shopian, expressed grave concerns over the increasing electricity tariffs and the financial burden it is placing on the residents, particularly the people with low income.
“Over the past week, I have visited several areas and met with locals to understand their grievances. As an MLA, it is my responsibility to ensure that these issues are addressed,” Kullay stated. He revealed that the most pressing concern was the sharp rise in electricity bills. According to the MLA, the tariff has escalated from Rs. 400 to 700 to Rs. 1800 or more, without any differentiation based on the economic status of the consumers.
“The bills are the same whether a person is above or below the poverty line. This is unfair and unjust, especially for those who are already struggling to make ends meet,” he added. Kullay also noted that despite raising the issue with the Power Department in the past, there has been no significant change.
The MLA called on the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to urgently address the matter. “I urge the government to review these tariffs as soon as possible ,” he said.
Furthermore, Kullay urged the people of Shopian, those residing in non-metered areas, to withhold payment of these inflated bills until a revision is carried out. “If the government and the concerned departments fail to review the bills within one week, we will be forced to take a stand and launch a mass agitation,” he warned.
