Srinagar: A powerful explosion late Friday night caused panic and alarm at Nowgam Police Station, where an inspection of seized explosive material was underway, said a media report.
“The blast occurred at around 11:20 pm when a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), accompanied by police personnel and the local Tehsildar, was examining a large quantity of ammonium nitrate earlier recovered in connection with a high-profile interstate terror network case,” news agency KDC cited sources as saying.
According to them, the explosion took place during the sampling and inspection process, resulting in extensive damage inside the premises. Several members of the inspection team sustained injuries, though the exact number of casualties is still being ascertained.
Authorities said that the incident was not a terror attack but an accidental detonation during the handling of sensitive material. “It’s a very unfortunate incident,” an official said.
Emergency responders rushed the injured to the hospital, and the entire area has been cordoned off for further investigation.
