Srinagar: Kupwara’s Rashid Shafi has made the nation proud by securing a gold medal at the Nordic International Wushu Championship, held in Sweden from December 12 to 14. Hailing from a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the young athlete delivered an outstanding performance on the international stage.
Rashid Shafi, as per Alfaaz – The Words, showcased exceptional skill and composure throughout the championship, winning three intense bouts against seasoned international competitors. He began his campaign with a victory over Italy, followed by a knockout win against Bangladesh in the semifinal, and culminated his performance by defeating the host nation, Sweden, in the final to claim the gold medal.
A trainee of the Khelo India Wushu Centre, Handwara, Rashid has been honing his skills under the guidance of Coach Aijaz Hassan. His achievement highlights the potential of rural talent when supported by structured training, expert mentorship, and sustained institutional backing.
Rashid expressed gratitude to Nuzhat Gul, Secretary, J&K Sports Council, for her leadership and initiatives aimed at strengthening the sports framework across Jammu and Kashmir. He also acknowledged Kuldeep Handoo, Chief Coach of India, for his continued efforts in advancing Wushu in the region.
He further thanked Ms. Aneesa, Chief Sports Officer; Javid-ul-Rehman, Centre Sports Officer; and Ms. Gazala, Divisional Sports Officer, for their unwavering support and encouragement.
Rashid Shafi also conveyed sincere appreciation to all well-wishers for their prayers and support, stating that their encouragement inspired him to perform at his best and secure gold for India at the international level.
