Srinagar: In a step aimed at modernization of the criminal justice system, Kupwara in north Kashmir’s Friday became the first district in Valley to use Global Positioning (Monitoring) System (GPS) on two bailed out accused.
As learnt, the two accused persons, Abid Ali Bhat and Abdul Majeed Bhat, undergoing a trial in an NDPS were tied with GPS-enabled anklets by a Police team led by ASP GM Bhat, DySP Ameen Bhat and SHO Kupwara Inspector Mohammad Ishaq.
The innovative step has been taken in a bid to enhance surveillance over the movement of the accused for better monitoring and safety for the community.
Notably, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has the record of being the first police force in India to introduce GPS tracker anklets for monitoring of accused. The J&K Police achieved the remarkable feat after the anklets were tied in November last year to a person accused under UAPA in Jammu on the directions of a Special NIA Court.
