Handwara: As part of “Khelo India” initiative by the Govt of India to promote sports for all, Vilgam Army Camp organised a Kho-Kho Championship for the girls of the Battalion Area.
Vilgam Kho-Kho field on Friday on the occasion of the final match of Vilgam Girls Kho-Kho Championship, was busting with great enthusiasm and team spirit displayed by the teams and the spectators witnessing the final match played between BHS Chak Sarmarg & BHS Trathpora.
The match provided significant impetus to the resurgence of traditional sports like Kho Kho, especially for young girls who played a pivotal role in challenging traditional gender stereotypes by making Kho Kho more accessible to girls. Team from Govt High School Trathpora & Govt High School Chak Sarmarg demonstrated their skills and passion towards the game.
A total of 23 teams from Kupwara, Rahmall, Trathpora, Magam & Rajwar Block participated in the Championship which started on 19 Oct 23 at COB level and finally culminated today with finals at Vilgam.
The energy displayed by players of both the teams was remarkable and very motivating. Govt High School Chak, Sarmarg won the exciting contest with a final score of 40-23.
Winners, Runners up and 2nd Runner up were presented with trophies, certificates, medals and a cash award of ₹ 5500, ₹ 3500, ₹ 2500 respectively.
Earlier in COB level Competition winner and runners up teams in all COBs were also felicitated with cash prizes of ₹1200 and ₹ 800 respectively. Best raider of the tournament was awarded with ₹500 cash prize.
Sport events organised by Army Camps under ‘Khelo India’ Campaign have not only revived the age-old sport of Kho Kho but has also empowered girls to break boundaries, shatter stereotypes and reach new heights in the field of sports. It stands as a testament to India’s commitment to gender equality, sports development and the nurturing of young talent.
