Srinagar: National Conference (NC) veteran and former cabinet minister Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan has secured a decisive victory in the Rajya Sabha elections from Jammu and Kashmir, emerging as the first officially declared winner in the four-seat contest.
According to officials, Chaudhary bagged 58 votes, benefiting from the numerical dominance of the NC-led alliance in the Legislative Assembly, where 86 members exercised their franchise earlier in the day.
Chaudhary’s win nonetheless came as no surprise given the NC’s consolidated support base within the alliance. Two more NC candidates are anticipated to follow suit, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remains confident of securing at least one seat as counting continues.
Following the announcement, Ramzan conveyed his appreciation to NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah, vice president Omar Abdullah, and the alliance partners, describing the outcome as a collective endorsement of the coalition’s commitment to protecting the political rights and democratic aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The counting process for the remaining seats is still in progress, with final results expected later this evening.
