Srinagar: After nearly eight years since its foundation stone was laid, construction is set to begin on a 130-bed, earthquake-resistant block at Lal Ded Hospital. Work is expected to commence shortly.
The government has now approved the project, having resolved the issues that previously delayed its completion.
The project, initially launched in 2016, saw the construction of its plinth by the Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC). However, following the dissolution of JKPCC and its merger with the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, the project experienced further delays. The foundation stone for the additional block was laid by then-Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
Muzaffar Jan, Medical Superintendent of Lal Ded Hospital said, “The project has been approved, and the tendering process is complete. The R&B Department has also reached out to us regarding equipment needs, and we anticipate that work will begin soon.”
Despite the initial construction of the plinth by JKPCC, the project faced setbacks as it was tendered out three times, each attempt failing due to a lack of participation. The 130-bed block is funded by the World Bank under the Jhelum and Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP), with an extension granted for its completion. Notably, the additional block at the Bone and Joint Hospital was also funded by the World Bank.
In the meantime, to enhance patient experience, Lal Ded Hospital has introduced digital boards and signage throughout the facility. Officials noted that this initiative aims to improve communication and accessibility, providing vital information to the public and ensuring a more seamless experience.
The digital boards display information on available medical services, departments, and facilities, important contact numbers, real-time updates on doctor availability, and critical alerts during emergencies. Additionally, boards have been installed to inform the public about doctors’ rights and laws protecting healthcare personnel. “This step complies with the recent Supreme Court directive related to the Kolkata rape and murder case. We have also ensured that necessary signage is in place to assist and guide attendants,” Dr Muzaffar added.
