Srinagar: In a dramatic turn of events, a rumour which gained significant traction among the voters, just hours before the formal start of third and terminal phase of assembly elections, implied involvement of Abrar Rashid, son of sitting Member Parliament Er Rashid, allegedly getting caught while distribution of money in an area falling within Langate constituency in Handwara.

Few social-media posts by a particular party, which Abrar himself later on claimed are being managed by a particular political party and a ‘self-styled’ mediaperson, posted that he (Abrar Rashid) was arrested while distributing money at Kralgund – an area adjacent to Er Rashid’s native village Lach Mawer.

The rumour stirred the highly charged political atmosphere ahead of the start of the formal polling process, prompting Abrar Rashid to live-stream a Facebook video. Abrar, the elder son of Er Rashid, known for his instrumental role to bring glory to AIP in recent Lok Sabha elections, outrightly denied the rumours. Calling the rumours as devoid of any authenticity and sheer political propaganda by the political opponents, a seemingly agitated Abrar asserted that, “It were the political opponents who are jilted with the massive acceptance of AIP among the people.”

In an over 15-minute video, captioned “Full sympathy with rumour mongers & Propagandandists”, Abrar, went on full throttle against political opponents, for alleging him of ‘getting caught while distribution of money’. The elder son of Er Rashid claimed that he was all asleep when woken up by his family and told that social-media is filled with rumours about having been arrested by Police with rupees fifty lac meant for distribution among voters. “Who seized all this money, and who then counted them?,” Abrar said, adding, “Why would we need to do so when we left behind our political opponents by over twenty thousand votes in Lok Sabha elections?”

The youth, who has been actively involved in his party’s campaigning in Lok Sabha and now assembly elections, demanded Police action against the rumour mongers for what he termed a ‘mischievous act.’

Believing in the saying that, ‘Politics is a battle of ideas’, Abrar asked his opponents “to fight AIP politically and on merit”.

“I was ‘live’ (streaming) a Facebook video before an hour only and within ten minutes, the rumour was spread that I was arrested,” said Abrar in his subsequent live video, broadcast at around 11 PM.
