Handwara: Residents of Baki Aker, a village in Handwara, are distressed over the ongoing illegal mining activities in the area.
As per reports, tactors are being used for mining operations in the Nallah Baki Aker, particularly near the damaged bridge, under the cover of night. This illegal activity has escalated to alarming levels, causing widespread anguish among locals.
Despite the increasing illegal mining, the representatives of Baki Aker village have been unable to take any substantial action, as they claim to be ‘powerless’ to address the issue. Residents are reportedly living in a state of depression, with the situation worsening with each day.
The villagers have appealed to local authorities for urgent intervention. Requests have been sent to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kupwara, DMO Kupwara, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Handwara, and the Tehsildar of Handwara, urging them to take swift action to stop the illegal mining and prevent further damage to the environment and local infrastructure.
Authorities, the locals said, are however yet to respond to the community’s plea even as the villagers remain hopeful for immediate action to stop the unlawful activities and bring peace to the region.
There have been in the meanwhile multiple concerns among the locals, which include; Environmental Impact: Illegal mining is causing significant damage to the local landscape and water bodies; Security Risks: The presence of tractors and other heavy machinery during the night raises concerns about law and order issues, and Community Frustration: The lack of action from local authorities and elected representatives is contributing to widespread dissatisfaction and helplessness among the residents.
The residents have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate action and ensure that justice is served to protect their environment and livelihoods.
