Kupwara: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) on Monday organized a workers’ convention at the Town Hall in Kupwara, as part of its ongoing campaign titled “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq” (Our State, Our Right).
The convention was graced by the presence of President Tariq Hameed Karra, Senior Leader and Vice Chairman DDC Kupwara Haji Farooq Ahmed Mir, MLA Kreeri Advocate Irfan Hafiz Lone, former MLA Sopore Haji Abdul Rasheed Dar, District President Baramulla Mir Iqbal, senior leader Nisar Mundo, and Mir Fayaz from Baramulla and the members of the District Congress Committee of Kupwara, along with thousands of Congress Party workers who had gathered from Lolab and various other parts of the district.
Upon the arrival of Haji Farooq Ahmed Mir, he was warmly welcomed by the District Congress Committee of Kupwara following his decision to rejoin the Indian National Congress. Party workers greeted him with floral bouquets and extended their heartfelt congratulations. The atmosphere reflected enthusiasm and unity as local leaders and supporters celebrated his entry into the party fold.
Addressing the media following the convention, Tariq Hameed Karra strongly criticized the Central Government for delaying the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, a promise that has remained unfulfilled since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
“Everyone knows that the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was unconstitutionally revoked on August 5, 2019. Since then, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have repeatedly assured, both inside and outside Parliament, that statehood would be restored. Even during their visits to Kashmir, similar promises were made. However, on the ground, we see no progress—only a series of excuses,” Karra stated.
He further said that the Centre had initially claimed that statehood would be restored after the completion of the delimitation process. “That process is now complete. They then shifted the goalpost, saying elections must be held first. It’s been eight months since the electoral process concluded, yet there’s still no sign of restoring statehood,” he added.
Karra emphasized that the Congress Party has persistently raised the issue of statehood, both before and after the elections. “When we realized that the government was making hollow excuses, we decided—after thorough consultations with party colleagues—to launch the Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq campaign. We began in the Jammu division and are now covering the Kashmir region. The campaign started in Kulgam and will continue across all districts of Kashmir until July 9,” he said.
Once the district-level outreach concludes, the campaign will be taken to the block level, with district committees tasked with ensuring its spread to every corner of the region.
“This campaign is not just for Congress or the National Conference—it’s a collective movement that concerns all 1.45 lakh citizens of this region. It’s our shared responsibility to unite under one voice,” Karra asserted.
When asked about the possibility of re-elections, Karra downplayed the speculation, calling it “psychological stress” being created to suppress the demand for statehood. “From my perspective, it’s merely psychological pressure and nothing substantial,”
“I’ve been hearing reports about the formation of a new alliance from you people, but as far as the Congress party is concerned, we are already part of a nationwide alliance that includes the National Conference and the PDP. I have no knowledge of any newly formed alliance, nor am I aware of its purpose,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Vice Chairperson of DDC Kupwara Haji Farooq Ahmed Mir, Advocate Irfan Hafeez Lone, Haji Abdul Rasheed Dar, and other speakers also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
