Anantnag: The Department of General Medicine (Division of Gastroenterology) at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has successfully performed palliative stenting on a 70-year-old female patient with inoperable esophageal cancer. The patient, who presented with complete dysphagia and had previously failed to tolerate chemoradiotherapy, underwent the life-altering procedure free-of-cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
According to Dr. Mushkoor Ahmad Beigh, Head of the Department of General Medicine and lead Gastroenterologist, GMC Anantnag is now the first among newly established medical colleges in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to conduct this advanced intervention. The stenting, executed outside traditional operating theaters using Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA), represents a significant advancement in peripheral healthcare delivery.
The multidisciplinary team, as per a hospital media statement, led by Dr. Beigh and Dr. Muzaffar Mir (Gastroenterologist), included critical support from anesthesia technicians Mr. Tariq, Mr. Layeeq, Mr. Asif, Ms. Jozia, and Mr. Farooq Malik.
NORA capabilities at GMC Anantnag, pioneered under the guidance of Principal and Dean Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, have been instrumental in expanding procedural scope. The Department of Anesthesiology, headed by Dr. Anjum Shamim, now facilitates NORA for complex interventions such as ERCP, advanced endoscopies, and sedation for psychiatric patients, optimizing limited resources while elevating tertiary care standards.
Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb commended Dr. Beigh’s team and the anesthesiology department for bringing “hope to the hopeless” through this demanding procedure. “This achievement exemplifies our commitment to making advanced, theater-independent anesthesia accessible in resource-constrained settings,” she, according to Alfaaz – The Words, stated, acknowledging faculty and staff efforts in operationalizing NORA protocols.
