Noor Ul Hassan Andrabi
Syed Manzoor, a highly respected figure, was born on December 8, 1974, in Shallgund Khurhama, a remote village nestled in the Lolab Valley of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. He began his early education in native village before moving to Maidanpora, where he completed his 9th and 10th grades. He then pursued higher education in Sogam and eventually graduated from Degree College Kupwara.
Syed Manzoor, popularly known as “Jana’an” among his known, in his youth displayed a deep interest in music and would be more often than not invited to perform at gatherings, especially at weddings and social events. These worldly distractions, however, became a source of concern for his parents, who feared he was straying from a purposeful path. In their search for guidance, a transformative chapter began in Syed Manzoor’s life. That turning point came when he was introduced to the Tablighi Jamaat, a global Islamic missionary movement known for its emphasis on simplicity, devotion and spiritual reform. Deeply inspired by its message, he became an active member. Under the mentorship of the eminent Tablighi Haji Shamu Din, Syed Manzoor underwent a profound transformation. The teachings and values of the Jamaat reshaped his worldview, grounding him in faith, humility and community service.
Fueled by a newfound sense of purpose, he chose a life devoted to both education and religious service. He began his teaching career, initially working at a private school in the nearby village of Saiwan, where he spent several years there, nurturing young minds and earning a reputation for his dedication and effectiveness.
In the year 2000, by the grace of Almighty Allah, his efforts bore fruit when he secured a government teaching position under ReT scheme. Over the years, he served at various educational institutions including UPS Shallgund, UPS Kuligam, UPS Changdi, Potkha, and Naad Kuligam. He served as a Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teacher and was later promoted to Head Teacher at UPS Shallgund. His leadership and unwavering commitment made him a respected figure among students, colleagues and the broader community.
Beyond academics, his spiritual journey continued to deepen. Having joined the Tablighi Jamaat in 1996, he actively engaged in its missionary work, traveling across various parts of India, including Gujarat and Surat, spreading the message of faith and spiritual growth.
Additionally, he served as a prayer leader (Imam) in several localities, including Kuligam, Potkha, and Goori Mohalla Kuligam. For 3–4 years, he also fulfilled the responsibilities of Jumma Imam (Friday congregation prayer leader), becoming a spiritual mentor and guide to many in the region.
In 2002, Syed Manzoor was married into a well-respected family from Tekipora, Lolab, embarking on a new and fulfilling phase of life.
However, on the evening of November 17, 2019, a tragic turn of events unfolded. I was on my way to Kupwara for personal work when I received multiple calls—four or five in total—from him, requesting that, bring along some important documents. I assured him that I would, but unfortunately I couldn’t make it back to him in time. That night, his health suddenly deteriorated. He developed an intense headache, began vomiting profusely and his blood pressure rose dangerously high. Alarmed, we rushed him to Sogam Hospital, where doctors, recognizing the seriousness of his condition, immediately referred him to SKIMS Soura for advanced care. Upon arrival, the medical team at SKIMS provided him with the utmost attention and did everything possible. Yet, in the early hours of November 18, 2019, at exactly 6:45 a.m., the heartbreaking news of his passing away reached us. He left this world while reciting the Kalimah Tayyibah—a departure that any believer would consider noble.
What made the loss even more difficult to bear was his demeanor during the ordeal. Throughout his treatment, he remained calm, cheerful, and soft-spoken. No one could have imagined that he was nearing the end.
His demise was mourned far and wide, with people from all walks of life expressing their heartfelt condolences. Many described his death as a profound loss—not only to society at large but particularly to the Tableeghi Jamaat, to which he had dedicated his life with unwavering commitment. His funeral prayers were held at Eid Gah Kuligam at 12:45 PM, led by the esteemed Pir Abdul Rasheed. A sea of mourners gathered—stretching from east to west, north to south—united in grief and love. As he was laid to rest in the nearby graveyard, the air was filled with the sound of sobbing, weeping, and heartfelt prayers. The atmosphere was deeply emotional, marked by a solemn silence and tearful farewells, a true testament to the immense impact he had on the lives of so many.
His sudden demise left a profound void in our lives. His legacy of kindness, humility, dedication to education and unwavering faith continues to inspire all those who knew him. His memory lives on in the hearts of the community he served so selflessly.
His colleagues, with whom he once worked so closely, still feel his absence deeply. His legacy, his calm demeanor, and his unwavering dedication continue to live on in their memories. Even now, his companions grieve, their voices choked with emotion as they call out, ‘Kahan tum chale gaye?’ – Where have you gone?
Throughout his years of service, his character and conduct earned him immense respect across every level—both within the organization and among the community. His integrity and humility were evident not just in professional settings, but also at the grassroots level. Everyone who knew him—regardless of age or rank—held him in the highest regard and never hesitated to respond when he asked for something. From the youngest to the elders, he was affectionately known as ‘Jana’an’—a title of endearment used even by his own parents, a rare testament to the deep love and reverence he inspired.
We still remember him every day—he has never truly left us. Though he may no longer be with us in person, he remains forever in our hearts. His spirit continues to bring us comfort, and we feel his presence in everything we do. His memory lives on, inspiring us and reminding us of the love and joy he brought into our lives. We continue to hold him in our hearts, for he has never truly left us. His memory remains a constant presence, offering us solace and strength. His spirit continues to guide and inspire us, reminding us that love transcends time and space. Though he is no longer with us physically, his essence endures in the cherished moments we shared and the lessons he imparted.
May Allah (SWT) grant his soul eternal peace and elevate his status in Jannah and may Allah grant us all the strength, patience and sabr to endure this profound and irreparable loss. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
