First Time After 2019, Turkish Prez Erdogan Skips Mention of Kashmir in UN Speech

UNITED NATIONS: For the first time in years, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not raise the issue of Kashmir during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Instead, his speech concentrated on the conflicts in Syria and Gaza, continuing his criticism of Israel and advocating for the Palestinian cause.

Erdogan, who has often positioned himself as a champion of Muslim issues globally, has frequently brought up Kashmir in past UN speeches, particularly after India’s abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. This year’s omission, however, comes as Turkey seeks to strengthen ties with BRICS, where India is a key member.

In previous years, Erdogan had consistently urged dialogue between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue. His 2023 address had called for lasting peace in South Asia through cooperation between the two nations. However, this notable shift in rhetoric may reflect Turkey’s evolving diplomatic priorities on the global stage.
