Srinagar: Police have registered a case against the administrator of a social media page for allegedly spreading false and misleading information related to a recent incident in central Kashmirโ€™s Budgam district.

In a media statement, the police said that an earlier case (FIR No. 165/2025) had been registered at Police Station Khansahib on August 26 under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following the killing of a horse in village Rakhai. โ€œDuring the investigation, it was found that the incident had occurred due to a personal dispute between the parties involved,โ€ the statement reads.

However, on October 5, the police said, they noticed that the Facebook page ‘Kashmir Speaks’ had posted content alleging that the horse was killed for selling its meat in the market at Arizal, which, according to officials, was โ€œfactually incorrectโ€ and created unnecessary alarm among residents.

โ€œAccordingly, a fresh case (FIR No. 187/2025) under Section 353(2) of BNS has been registered at Police Station Khansahib, and an investigation has been initiated,โ€ the statement reads.

Budgam Police have in the meantime urged social media users to verify information before sharing and to avoid circulating unconfirmed reports that may disturb public peace and order. โ€œStrict legal action will follow against those involved in spreading fake or misleading content,โ€ the police cautioned.
