Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday termed (social media) posts regarding death of a student from Sopore, in Chandigarh, as ‘factually incorrect’, saying that the boy died of ‘acute malaria infection’ in year 2021.
“It has come to the notice of Sopore Police that certain social media handles are spreading misinformation regarding the alleged death of a student from Bomai, Sopore in Chandigarh,” said a Police Spokesperson.
“It is clarified that the individual mentioned in these posts had, in fact, passed away in 2021 due to an acute malaria infection,” statement reads.
“The current posts are factually incorrect and misleading.”
“General public is advised not to circulate or share such fake news, as it can cause unnecessary panic and distress. Sopore Police has taken cognizance of the matter and legal action is being initiated against those responsible for spreading this false information,” reads the statement.
“Sopore Police is also in contact with the family members of students from the area who are pursuing studies outside the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. All possible assistance and support shall be extended to them in case of any need or emergency,” reads the statement.
“Strict action will be taken against those who misuse social media platforms to spread rumours or create fear among the public,” concludes the statement.
