Duo Arrested With Contraband Worth Crores in Handwara

Handwara: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said to have arrested two persons with contraband worth crores in Handwara.

“In a determined effort to combat drug trafficking, Handwara Police has arrested two individuals and confiscated a significant quantity of contraband, valued at several crore rupees. The police have requested public cooperation in identifying and reporting drug-related activities to help strengthen the ongoing crackdown,” said a police spokesperson in a media statement.

“During a routine checkpoint (naka) established by Police Station (PS) Handwara, officers apprehended an individual carrying a suspicious substance. On investigation, 465 grams of a substance resembling brown sugar was recovered. The suspect was identified as Javid Ah Sofi, son of Ab Razaq, resident of Handwara. The case was registered under FIR No. 193/2024, U/s 8/21 of the NDPS Act,” the statement reads.

“In another successful operation, PS Qalamabad apprehended another individual in possession of a heroin-like substance weighing 426 grams from Fayaz Ah, resident of Maratgam, Handwara. An FIR No. 47/2024 has been registered under U/S 8/21 of the NDPS Act,” reads the statement.

The spokesperson in a public advisory said that, “Handwara Police has identified multiple hotspots where drug-related activities are suspected, and more arrests are expected as investigations progress. To combat this serious issue, the police urge all citizens to report any information about drug peddling activities in the area.”

“Anonymous tips will be treated with the utmost confidentiality, and public cooperation is crucial in maintaining a safe, drug-free community,” said the spokesperson further.
