Florida (United States): Former President Donald Trump declared victory as he closed in on a second term in the White House after securing decisive wins in critical battleground states on Wednesday.
In an early-morning address to supporters in Florida, Trump expressed gratitude for the support he received nationwide.”America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” he told the cheering crowd at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, calling it a “magnificent victory for Americans.”
Celebrating what he described as a “never-seen-before political victory” with wife Melania and youngest son Baron on stage with him, Trump said the results gave him a “great feeling of love.”
As per projections, Trump has secured 267 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election, sharply curtailing Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’s path to victory. He is also leading in key races left to be called, including the swing states of Michigan and Wisconsin.
Without directly mentioning his felonious conviction and legal troubles, the Republican claimed he had overcome “obstacles that nobody thought possible” to lead “the greatest political movement of all time.”
After a campaign marked by divisive and violent rhetoric, Trump promised that his presidency would usher in a “golden age” for the country and deliver a “strong, safe and prosperous” America.
“We made history tonight… This is a magnificent victory for the American people, that will allow us to make America great again,” he said, using his signature slogan. Trump pledged to address immigration and border issues and vowed to “help our country heal”.
He also touched upon the assassination attempt he survived in July, saying that people tell him that “God spared my life for a reason”.
“And that reason was to save our country and restore America to greatness. And now we’re going to fulfil that mission together,” he asserted.
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, echoed the sentiment, telling the crowd, “We just witnessed the greatest political comeback in the history of the United States of America.”
On his part, Trump praised Vance, saying he “turned out to be a good choice.
“He also heaped praise on billionaire Elon Musk in his victory speech, and said a “new star is born.” Trump spoke at length about SpaceX’s rockets and lauded Musk as a “special guy” and “super genius”, adding that “we need to protect our super geniuses.”
Trump’s performance showed gains over his 2020 run, with stronger support in both rural and urban areas in several states, indicating his campaign’s broader reach across the country.
The race now hinges on final tallies, but with projected wins in 26 states, the 78-year-old appears poised for a historic comeback.
