New Delhi: A powerful explosion occurred in a car near Gate No. 1 of Delhiโs Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station on Monday evening, killing one person and injuring several others. The incident triggered panic in the high-security zone, prompting an immediate response from the police and fire department.
According to the Delhi Fire Department, a call about the explosion was received around 6:55 pm, after which seven fire tenders and 15 CAT ambulances were rushed to the spot. The fire spread to three nearby vehicles, all of which were gutted before firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.
India Today cited Police sources as saying that the blast was extremely powerful, shattering nearby streetlights. Senior officers, including the DCP of the Special Cell, have reached the site to supervise the investigation.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown, but it comes just hours after police busted an interstate terror module linked to banned outfits and recovered over 2,900 kilograms of suspected ammonium nitrate, including 360 kg seized earlier and an additional 2,500 kg of the explosive-making chemical.
Officials had said there was a conspiracy to terrorise Delhi using hundreds of powerful IEDs made from the recovered material.
The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. Forensic teams are examining the scene, while the police have cordoned off the entire area and issued a high alert across the national capital.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
