Handwara: Authorities in Handwara came down heavily and seized several vehicles after incumbent MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed recommended action over illegal mining activities in nallah Mawer.
After receiving time to time complaints from locals, complaining the illegal mining activities by some unscrupulous elements inside nallah Mawer, MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed on Thursday personally visited the site for an onsite assessment. Witnessing the mining activities, the MLA concerned informed and recommended action from the department.
Honouring the recommendations, a team of Geology and Mining Department reached the site and took a seizure of various vehicles including two JCBs and three tippers.
“I have been time and again being informed by the locals that some selected people are being allowed to mine the minerals from the nallah, while the local populace who otherwise have the first right are being deprived of the same,” MLA Sheikh Khursheed said, adding, “I visited to corroborate the local claims with the ground situation and to my utter shock, it turned out that things are more worse than I was being informed of.”
“This is not done, as such an unscrupulous activity has far reaching repercussions on our ecology and economy at the same time,” said the legislator talking to Alfaaz – The Words.
Appreciating the timely action by the department concerned, Khursheed said that, “I hope the department will continue with its action in days to come, so the people don’t have to suffer anymore.”
A Geology & Mining Department official in the meantime said that they will come upto the expectations of all stakeholders to ensure that such activities are controlled in all possible manner.
