Lolab (Kupwara): Authorities have intensified market inspection to crackdown on black marketing practices and do away with sale of expired products in Lolab amid holy month of Ramadan. The drive is being held under the supervision of SDM Javid Naseem Masoodi on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Ayushi Sudan.
The operation, continuing for second consecutive week, is being facilitated by Tehsildar Sogam Lalpora Saqib Murtaza, Naib Tehsildar Sogam Mushtaq Ahmad, Naib Tehsildar Lalpora Zakir Ahmad and also officials from Food Department and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Continuing with the drive, the joint team on Wednesday conducted thorough checks in markets and commercial areas to enforce fair trade practices. The inspecting team on the occasion scrutinized essential commodities, verified price lists, and tested weighing scales for accuracy.
Giving details, an official said that over three days, hundreds of expired oil tins (2kg and 5kg) were seized, prompted by reports of a vehicle transporting outdated stock into the valley. Two shops, one in Kandhar and another in Chandigam, Lolab, were sealed for violations.
SDM issued a stern warning to retailers, urging compliance with regulations and cautioning against overpricing or selling expired goods. He also encouraged residents to report violations to local authorities, emphasizing that legal action would follow non-compliance.
The crackdown spanned Warnow, Khurhama, Kandhar, Chandigam, and adjacent areas. In addition to edible oils, expired junk food and other substandard items were confiscated and destroyed.
Authorities reaffirmed that the operation aims to safeguard consumers from exploitation and ensure businesses adhere to legal standards. Residents have been asked to report grievances, if any, via designated helplines or at the SDM’s office in Lalpora.
