Srinagar: An ancient stone sculpture recovered during a routine patrol near Gulmarg has been formally transferred by Baramulla Police to the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K for expert assessment and preservation.
As per a statement, the artefact was handed over to a team from the Directorate led by Dr. Javed Ahmad Mattoo. The sculpture, believed to represent either Lord Vishnu or Lord Surya, is estimated to be several centuries old and was found by personnel from Police Station Gulmarg during a routine patrol in the area.
The finely carved stone piece reflects the regionโs deep cultural and historical legacy. Police secured the sculpture immediately under the supervision of the SHO, PS Gulmarg, and coordinated with the Directorate for its proper documentation and conservation.
The statement added that the handover highlights the J&K Policeโs ongoing efforts to safeguard archaeological assets and promote greater awareness of Jammu & Kashmirโs heritage.
