New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has imposed Presidentโs Rule in Manipur, citing the state government’s inability to function as per constitutional provisions. The decision follows a report from the Governor of Manipur, which highlighted the political instability in the state.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification (G.S.R. 134(E), confirming that the President has assumed all functions of the state government under Article 356 of the Constitution. This move effectively dissolves the authority of the Manipur government and places legislative powers under the control of Parliament.
As part of the proclamation, the Governorโs executive powers are now directly vested in the President; the state legislatureโs functions will be exercised by or under the authority of Parliament; several constitutional provisions related to state governance have been suspended, including those concerning the Chief Minister, Council of Ministers, and state legislative proceedings.
This marks a significant political development for Manipur, as Presidentโs Rule means the state will now be directly governed by the Union Government until normalcy is restored.
